5 steps to art appreciation

5 steps to art appreciation

I still remember when my friends first invited me to an art gallery and my instinctive reaction was to feel scared. It was a strange feeling because I’ve always loved art especially paintings, so why worry. It dawned on me that I wasn’t worried about trying out the panels but how to react to them, what to say and how to talk about them so I didn’t look like a complete idiot to my friends.

This unusual problem led me to explore and find a simple and humble approach to art appreciation. The idea is to demystify the process and make it easy to enjoy the art. Here are some of the steps I came up with to make it an easy learning experience

First tip: Make it a habit to notice and appreciate art

In order to understand your own interests and inclinations in art, develop a habit of seriously observing any artistic object you come across whether it is a painting or a sculpture. We often overlook the technical stuff sitting right in front of us. How many of us honestly take a few free minutes in our office to look at the paintings on our office walls.

If we spend some time observing and appreciating the art we are exposed to in everyday life, we will learn a lot about the things that attract and attract us the most and also the things that we don’t like. In short, you will understand more clearly what you like and dislike about art

Tip two: Develop your unique artistic sense

Once you’ve taken some time to examine your own preferences in art, you can move toward understanding which forms of visual art connect with you the most. For some it is lifelike representations in sculpture, for others it is the painter’s ability to vividly depict a memory. For many of us, all forms of art are a treat for the senses and a tribute to the artist’s efforts

As you regulate your own reactions to different forms of art, you will learn to recognize the small differences and subtle differences in colors and shapes that make a painting either endearing or unattractive to you.

Tip #3 Find pieces that you like

Now that you have an understanding of what colors, shapes and styles interest you the most, you should research them further to see if they represent a particular art style or form of art, for example in paintings they can be abstract, figurative or a combination of colors and subject matter that represents a specific style and style of painting

As you go further, this search will help you find more uniquely the artists and media you like the most. Oftentimes, patterns and colors that appeal to us have a special meaning to us and may originate from a particular area of the world or perhaps from an art form that we were exposed to early in life and left a great impression on us. Sometimes it’s the art you experienced on a great vacation that left great memories and gave you a solid crush for life, the reasons to admire some forms of art are endless, and some reflection on that might give you some clues.

Tip #4 Hone your sense of art

You have already explored and created your own artistic personality and are equipped with the knowledge of which art styles appeal to you the most. Your research has provided you with enough information to feel confident about giving feedback to different styles and also to identify what appeals to you about different paintings, whether it is the artist’s attempt to express their feelings or the feelings the painting evokes in you.

A very important tool that can help improve your sense of art is keeping an art journal. Before you get put off by this seemingly complicated business, let me quickly point out that it is the simplest form of dairy preservation. It is a record of the pieces of art you see and your reactions to each piece, and this record can be an important way in improving and enriching your unique artistic sense. Another important benefit of this art journal is that it can be a very effective way to relieve stress. No kidding… Keeping an art journal is one of the main activities in art therapy which is a form of therapy that uses creativity and art in the healing process

Tip #5 Open up to new experiences in art

The final and most important tip in the art appreciation process is to keep your mind open and receptive to new artistic experiences. One of the disadvantages of developing a specific pattern of likes and dislikes in your artistic persona is falling into that pattern trap. Do not lock yourself in this castle of your creativity but stay open to completely new and different creations and art forms.

The whole purpose of appreciating art is to open your subconscious mind to be receptive to new experiences and creations. You will be amazed as you read through your art history over time to see your taste change over time into different styles and patterns. Always remember that the point of art appreciation is to recognize and understand your love for art and art.
